What is it Wednesday: Red Wine Vinegar Powder

Red Wine Vinegar Powder

This week we’re shining the spotlight on Red Wine Vinegar Powder, an AllSpice ingredient customers are often a bit curious about. So, what is it?

First, let's talk about Red Wine Vinegar. To create red wine vinegar, grapes become wine before becoming vinegar, which results in a more acidic bite and thinner consistency vinegar than you’d find in a balsamic. It's bite makes red wine vinegar great in vinaigrettes, sauces, soups, roasted veggies, and more.

Red wine vinegar is dehydrated to create Red Wine Vinegar Powder. The fine, pink powder is a convenient way to add the zippy flavor of the vinegar to a dish without adding liquid vinegar.

We like to use it to add a bit of tartness to our rubs, marinades, sauces, and other dry spice mixes. It’s a good substitute for salt, making it a perfect addition to snack mixes and popcorn and for creating homemade vinegar kettle chips. We love it as a condiment too - try sprinkling it over your roasted veggies or fries.

While Red Wine Vinegar powder adds the signature zing of vinegar to your recipes, the process of dehydrating the vinegar does reduce its acidity. Because of that, we don’t recommend using it as a direct substitute for red wine vinegar in recipes that call for it. Instead use it where a dry product would be handier.
